On January 1, 2015, the Ontario Power Authority (OPA) merged with the Independent Electricity System Operator to create a new organization that will combine the OPA and IESO mandates and continue the high quality work both organizations are known for.
The IESO works closely with our industry partners and a broad range of stakeholders across the province on a variety of activities. Below are current programs, projects and initiatives of the IESO.
Aboriginal Energy Partnerships Program
The Aboriginal Energy Partnership Program helps support First Nation and Métis community participation in the development of renewable energy.
The Conservation Fund supports innovation and creativity in Ontario through financial support for new conservation and demand management programs, practices and technologies.
Education and Capacity Building Program
The ECB Program provides support for diverse education and capacity-building initiatives, and facilitates knowledge-sharing and the participation of Aboriginal communities, municipalities, public sector entities and co-operatives in Ontario's renewable energy sector.
First Nations and Métis Relations
The IESO and the Ontario Government see First Nations and Métis perspectives as an important dimension in developing and implementing an electricity plan for the province, as it moves to a cleaner, greener system.
FIT and microFIT
The Feed-in tariff (FIT) program, which offers long-term contracts to renewable energy producers, is divided into two streams - FIT and microFIT. The FIT Program is for renewable energy projects that can generate more than 10 kilowatts (kW) of electricity. Very small projects, at a home or small business, that can generate 10 kW or less come under the microFIT Program.
Hydroelectric Contract Initiative (HCI)
As part of Ontario's commitment to increase the supply of clean, renewable generation, the HCI program negotiates new contracts for qualified existing hydroelectric generation facilities in Ontario.
The Industrial Accelerator program provides financial incentives to eligible companies to encourage investment in major energy-efficiency projects, such as process changes and equipment retrofits.
Industrial Electricity Incentive Program
The Industrial Electricity Incentive (IEI) program is intended to promote growth in the industrial sector by taking advantage of Ontario's strong energy supply. It encourages existing industrial companies to create new jobs and bring new investment to the province in exchange for reduced electricity rates.
The Innovation Centre is a showcase for new and innovative technologies, and leadership in energy conservation.
IESO Funding Programs
The IESO offers a range of funding programs that support Aboriginal communities, municipalities, public sector entities and co-operatives in the design and delivery of renewable energy and conservation initiatives.
